The myth of the “absentee Black father” is just that, a myth. Statistically speaking, Black fathers are actually the MOST present and active in the day to day lives of their children. It was important I use my voice even if only in a small way, to change the narrative about Black fathers. My own dad was amazing and he passed before I could become a father myself and understand all he did to sacrifice for us. And I’m certain even if he was still here and I could ask him directly, there would be countless things he did (or didn’t do) I would NEVER know about.
As much as this series honors the fathers and children that sat for the references, ultimately this series is the “thank you” I never got to say to my own dad.
Though the dots in my work don’t always represent time, I’ve used them in previous works as a narrative tool, so i revisited that motif for this series. The total number of dots in each piece represent the father’s age and the white dots represent the number of years they’ve been a father or simply put the child’s age.
